JAPAN | PRISKA PASQUER

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, this year’s Paris Photo opened it’s doors – it is the 15th time that I have come to Paris to take part in the fair. I would like to take the occasion of this anniversary as an opportunity to share the main focus of our gallery program. This first newsletter is dedicated to Japan. Since opening the gallery in 2000, we have been working with many artists from Japan and were the ones to initially introduce them to the Western market at Paris Photo.

Ferdinand Brueggemann’s profound knowledge and expertise of Japanese photography, gained during studies on-site, has enriched the gallery’s program. He has been co-curating several exhibitions with contemporary Japanese artists at European museums like Lieko Shiga at Foam in Amsterdam as well as Rinko Kawauchi at FoMu in Antwerp.

Since the beginning of 2014, he has been working on essays on Japanese Photography. The first excerpt is available on our Japan blog on our new website.

Enjoy,
Priska

JAPAN at | PRISKA PASQUER

Operating with Japanese Photography has a long tradition at | PRISKA PASQUER. Priska first got involved with the medium when she was working as an independent art consultant in the 1990s. She turned to Japan as she was particularly interested in the influence of German photography from the 1920/30s on photography in Japan during that time period. This led her to Osamu Shiihara who became the first artist to be represented by her outside of Japan. The further her knowledge and interest evolved the more obvious it became to build a progam, strongly focused on Japanese photographers influenced by German photography. Iwao Yamawaki, the only Japanese artists of the Bauhaus, was added to the program.

A major event in promoting Japanese photography internationally was Paris Photo 2008 with Japan as guest of honour. Suggested by Priska Pasquer it was the first time that a major group of Japanese galleries and publishers introduced their program to an international audience.
