Malerin, Grafikerin, Bildhauerin und Fotografin Leiko Ikemura zeigt Konfrontationen zwischen einem dunklen weiblichen Sujet und mystischen Landschaften. Nachdem sie die erste Hälfte ihrer 30-jährigen Karriere mit den ausdrucksvollen Möglichkeiten von Öl und Aquarellen in halb abstrakten Porträts und Landschaften verbrachte, wandte sie sich 1984 zur Skulptur.
Painter, draughtswoman, sculptor, and photographer Leiko Ikemura depicts confrontations between an obscure female subject and mystical landscapes. After spending the first half of her 30-year career studying the expressive possibilities of oil and watercolors in semi-abstract portraits and landscapes, she turned to sculpture in 1984.
Leiko Ikemura hat in den letzten dreißig Jahren als Malerin, Bildhauerin und Zeichnerin ein umfangreiches Werk geschaffen hat.
Seit Mitte der 1990er-Jahre hat Ikemura das Sujet ihrer Kunst gefunden: in sich versunkene anonyme Figuren, schemenhafte weiblichen Wesen und kosmische Landschaften mit der Horizontlinie als Schwelle in den unendlichen Raum. Ikemuras Figuren bewohnen eine elementare Welt aus Licht und Farbe, Land und Meer. Landschaftliche Formen werden anthropomorph interpretiert, Gesichter und Felsen verschmelzen zu hybriden Naturbildern. Ihre Kunst ist der Versuch, der rationalen Kontrolle und den herandrängenden Bildern des Alltags zu entkommen, um sich den Kräften der Intuition zu überlassen. „Augen sind fragwürdige Organe, die unbemerkt sich der Welt verschließen …“ (Leiko Ikemura)
In Japan geboren und aufgewachsen, hat sich Ikemura als junge Studentin entschlossen, in Europa zu leben, zunächst in Spanien, dann in der Schweiz, schließlich in Deutschland. Hier bilden seit vielen Jahren Köln und Berlin ihre Lebens- und Arbeitsräume. Oft wurde der besondere Reiz der Kunst Ikemuras aus der Begegnung zweier Kulturen erklärt: aus dem Gefühl der Fremdheit, aus dem anderen, nicht-westlichen Verständnis von Person und Raum. Die Künstlerin verzichtet zumeist auf die Darstellung eines abgegrenzten Individuums, wie es dem westlichen Denken entspricht. Ihre Figurationen sind keine fixierten und abgegrenzten Gestalten, kein Ausdruck in sich ruhender Identität. Ihnen liegt ein anderes Vorstellungsbild zugrunde: Ikemuras Kunst verweist auf ein Leben vor der Trennung von Subjekt und Objekt oder auf einen imaginären Ort nach der Überwindung des Subjekt-Objekt-Dualismus.

Leiko Ikemura has spent the last thirty years creating an extensive oeuvre as a painter, sculptor, and draughtswoman. The artist found her style in the mid-1990s depicting nameless figures shrouded in thought, ghostlike beings and unearthly landscapes, in which the line of the horizon acts as the threshold to infinite space.
Ikemura’s figures inhabit an elementary world of light and colour, land and sea. Shadowy landscape forms are construed as anthropomorphic shapes, faces and rocks merge into hybrid images of nature. Ikemura’s art constitutes an attempt to break down our rational constraints and escape the scores of images that surge in on us each day, leaving us to instead trust our intuition. “Eyes are dubious organs that shut themselves off from the world without us noticing…” (Leiko Ikemura)
Born and raised in Japan, Ikemura decided to move to Europe as a young student, living first in Spain, then in Switzerland, before finally settling in Germany. Her time is spent between Cologne and Berlin. The particular charm of Ikemura’s art has often been explained as arising from the encounter between two cultures, from a sense of otherness, from a different, non-Western and thus non-dualistic understanding of the individual and space. The artist largely foregoes depicting the individual in the typical Western manner as clearly separate from his or her surroundings. Her figures are not fixed and wholly distinct forms, they are not expressions of some inherent individuality. Underpinned by a different concept of the world, Ikemura’s art points to a life before the separation of subject and object, and to an imaginary place viewed in the surmounting of the subjective-objective dichotomy.
