RESET I and MODERNISM

Frank Ammerlaan (*1979, born in the Netherlands, lives and works in London)
Frank Ammerlaan is a painter, but for the past few years he has also worked across various media with sculpture, photography and video. Ammerlaan studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Akademy in Amsterdam and at the Royal College of Art in London. His work has received a number of awards, including the Scheffer Prize (2013), the Royal Prize of Painting, the Land Securities Prize RCA, the Doha Studio Art Prize (all in 2012) and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Painting Prize (2007).
The images produced by Ammerlaan are created on the fringes between media, materials and processes. He often uses fluorescent, metallic liquids and chemicals that make his works shimmer like pools of oil. Their indistinguishable surfaces draw the viewer’s gaze without providing a central subject as a point of reference.
Ammerlaan’s works are, nevertheless, not abstract paintings. He neither constructs his images according to a preconceived plan, nor does he use the painting process to reproduce a recognisable characteristic result. Ammerlaan experiments with what painting can do and how it can help him to explore his ideas and questions about the world. He is interested in the relationship between the unrepresentable, the sublime and the inner beauty of natural reactions.
”The artist’s interest in the unrepresentable and unknown is complex and convoluted: While his mistrust of all forms of authority is a subtle political statement, he reacts just as hesitantly when it comes to more romantic forms of sublimity, such as nature.”
