Warren Neidich, Equal Not Equal

Born in New York in 1958, Warren Neidich lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles. As an author, art theoretician and interdisciplinary post-conceptual artist, he examines how digital possibilities change our habits, perceptions and ideas. His exploratory work focuses on the neuroaesthetics field of artistic research, in which sensory impressions, perception and consciousness are examined with the aid of techniques, methods, devices, critiques and the history of artistic production.
The neon wall piece “Equal Not Equal” changes quickly from one sign to its opposite. Do we perceive a statement or its negation? This work experiments with the notion of equal status and of a new sense of community in our globally networked world. One of the most hotly debated present-day questions is that of diversity, equality and justice. Sociologists and politicians explore this question, as do philosophers, economists and – needless to say – artists. In art, of course, polarised thinking has already been largely transcended and coexistence on equal terms is often axiomatic.
