Tristano di Robilant, born in London in 1964, grew up in Italy and England. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he was influenced by the lectures of the architectural historian and critic Reyner Banham (1922-1988). Tristano’s first solo exhibition was at the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York. He later collaborated with curator and gallerist Lance Fung on a series of glass sculptures entitled Domestic Temples, now part of the Sol LeWitt Collection. Invited by Giorgio Guglielmino to Calcutta, Tristano travelled repeatedly to Bengal to work on a series of silkscreens in collaboration with Pria Lall. Tristano has exhibited extensively both in Europe and in the United States, including at Annina Nosei’s gallery in New York, Galleria Bonomo and Paolo Curti & Co in Italy, and Piece Unique in Paris.
In 2007, Cornelia Lauf curated a show at the Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi in Rome, concentrating on works in ceramic and glass. Tristano currently lives and works in Rome.
“In some of the most evocative objects di Robilant explores the range of glass as a medium, its use in modernist sculpture as well as its ancient utilitarian tradition. Works titled Instruments of Love (2006 and 2009) are squat emerald green vessels that unapologetically claim to be vases. The three tall necks protruding from each of these biomorphic shapes indicate, however, something alive, like tubular leaves of a carnivorous plant or the arteries stemming from a vital human organ. On the other side of the spectrum, Three Cups and Six Hats (both 2007) are formal arrangements of abstract shapes. In the former, three domed units, like green mushroom caps, are stacked upon each other in a spare and elegant composition that echoes certain of the artist’s sculptures in other mediums. The nonchalant pile of clear glass circular forms in Six Hats recalls the minimalist compositions and architectonic forms of some of di Robilant’s earliest experiments in glass, such as his 1997 series of cast pieces Domestic Temples. All of the new works prove that he has gracefully adopted glass not only as a medium to expand his tactile experiments bus at a means to amplify his unique sculptural vision.”
