Viktoria Binschtok erkundet das grundlegend komplexe Verhältnis zwischen fotografischer Repräsentation und Wirklichkeit. In diesem Sommer präsentierte C/O Berlin die erste umfassende Ausstellung ihres fotografischen Gesamtwerks.
Mit einem spannenden Verwirrspiel aus digitaler Realität und analoger Virtualität hinterfragt Viktoria Binschtok gewohntes Sehverhalten und untersucht die von der Bildschirm basierten Kultur geprägte visuelle Sprache unserer Zeit. In ihrer „Cluster“-Serie stellt Binschtok Bilder mit visuellen oder formalen Assoziationen zusammen. Sie generiert diese Serien, indem sie eigene Fotos in den Computer eingibt und dann mithilfe von Algorithmen das Internet nach ähnlichen Bildern durchsuchen lässt. Aus dem Angebot wählt sie einige Motive aus, manipuliert sie und speist sie wieder ein. In diesem zyklischen Dialog mit dem Computer verschwinden die Definitionen von Bildquelle, Ergebnis oder Autorschaft und Bedeutungszusammenhänge lösen sich im Fluss der gleichwertigen Bilder auf. Es geht um die heutige Willkür des Visuellen, die Binschtok mit der konkreten Materialisierung der Serien dann wiederum konterkariert.

Viktoria Binschtok examines the fundamental complex relationship between photographic representation and reality. This summer C/O Berlin presented the first comprehensive exhibition of her complete photographic work.
With an enthralling yet confusing tangle of digital reality and analogue virtuality, Binschtok questions the nature of habitual ways of viewing the world and probes the computer-screen-culture-based visual language of our times. In her “Cluster” series, Binschtok arranges images with visual and formal associations. She generates this series by entering her own photos into the computer and then, with the help of algorithms, searches the internet for similar images. She selects a number of motifs from the search results, manipulates them and feeds them back into the computer. In this cyclical dialogue with the computer, the boundaries between picture source, search result and authorship gradually blur and meaningful correlations vanish in the seemingly endless flow of homologous images. The goal is to examine the random nature of today’s visual world, which Binschtok subsequently exposes with the concrete materialisation of the series.
